Introducing the Eurovision 2013 ‘Alternative Awards’, where we judge the best and worst aspects of all the nations’ entries on a truly random (and sometimes downright silly) array of stuff. Every couple of days we will introduce some new wacky awards, including the best and worst and the runners up. These are one person’s opinion, the author’s (Sebastien), and of course don’t reflect the opinion of everyone at ESCUnited!

Lets kick off then! Here are the awards for:

Music Video

Quite a broad category this then, encompassing all countries’ official videos posted by the Eurovision official website. Countries who have posted videos of live performances, say in their national final, are not counted. The song is in no way taken into account, just the video.

Best:

SloveniaHannah, Straight Into Love

A stylish piece of creativity from the slovenians here, with the most squeezed out of topless men. Lighting strips and lasers steal the show, with some nice shots and angles. 8/10

Runners Up:

FinlandKrista Siegfrids, Marry Me

A splash of fun. 7.5/10

MontenegroWho See, Igranka

For sheer outrageousness. 7.5/10

Italy-Marco Mengoni, L’Essenziale

Quite a professional and classy piece of work. 7.5/10

Worst:

NetherlandsAnouk, Birds

Pathetic from the Netherlands. Please, if you want to give a video, make an effort. Don’t bother if you don’t, honestly. Not sure this is classed as a music video, but really, why would they do this. An awful quality recording, just watching her singing. Pah. 1/10

Runners Up:

BelgiumRoberto Bellarossa, Love Kills

Not good. Filmed in small room with two camera angles. 2/10

HungaryByeAlex, Kedvesem

Cartoons are bad for music videos. 2/10

IrelandRyan Dolan, Only Love Survives

Incredibly cheesy and disgracefully typical. 3/10

Love Slovenia’s Straight intolove video. Picture and sound make a perfect match. And it was a low budget video.

Yes, it is subjective. But that is exactly what the article says

“These are one person’s opinion, the author’s (Sebastien), and of course don’t reflect the opinion of everyone at ESCUnited!”

It’s obvious that this is to stimulate conversations and to share our thoughts. I also don’t think that the Slovenian video is anything special but Ukraine wouldn’t win a poll either. It’s way to kitschy and literal. I think Finland would win in a poll.

I think it is big unfair Ukraine is not even mentioned. In my opinion it is best video by far. I believe if there can be organized poll/voting about best videos it would win that one! Also, Malta has great music video, that perfectly suits atmosphere of the song, not even mentioned. And I agree that Greece has nice one too.
Furthermore, I find Slovenia’s video very average and far away from first place, really do not get criteria on which it got first place. It is recorded in one place, without many creative situations, very distracting lighting strips and lasser, something not so much positive (at least for me). It is not negative neither, but I do not see something so positive in it to give it first place. To not get me wrong, video is not bad, but not for first place. Very biased opinion for article author.
About other (good) videos mentioned in this article, I agree with them, that they are best this year, but along with Ukraine, Greece, Malta and even Cyprus.

When we talk about bad ones, I agree on Netherlands. But can we even consider it as “official video”. Or isn’t that just “preview” video. Anyway, worst out of all of them. 😉 Don’t agree with Belgium. Maybe it is simple, but it is recorded very good and it is not monotone and boring and don’t get why it is among worsts with so many videos only from NFs. Also, do not see reason that Hungary just because of chartos (which is something different) is positioned so low and consider bad. Agree on Ireland too. 😉 Do not like Moldova’s one too, it could be wide screen at least. Performance on NF was good. 😉

I have not watched all the videos so it is difficult to comment yet. But I do like the cartoons in Hungary, something different.

I agree, Greece’s is funny! One that I like that’s also not mentioned here is France’s-but it does feel like it gonna burst into some awkward, inappropriate scenes (if you get what I’m hinting at) at any moment!

My personal favorite is Finland, it’s a lot of fun and certainly stands out from the rest of the pack but I also find Malta’s clip really cute and appropriate. In addition, Greece’s video is hilarious.

There are a lot of blah videos out there cause so many are live performances recorded quite badly. Sweden used a clip of a performance that was vocally really bad, Robyn’s voice was shaky and just not right.
