I really like this contest because I can't find any disgraceful entries, actually quite the opposite. A lot of them were really memorable in my opinion: even after decades I can listen to them without being bored at all, despite ballads again being the main thing. Nothing against Eimear or her song, but this is definitely the year Norway or Sweden deserved to win and actually my mind changed a lot of times before having Elisabeth as my winner for this year (even if Den Vilda is one of the very best entries Sweden ever send). 1996 feels like a prequel of the GEOAT, with the debuts of Şebnem and Marija-Liis representing Turkey and Estonia, with the Uk returning in contention after two so-so years, with Ireland being dominant and the country to beat again... At the time it seemed aa normal Eurovision, but then came...

1997 (a.k.a. THE Greatest Eurovision Of All Time):

This is the only time I share my thoughts before spoiling my ranking: I feel sorry this year had only one winner, because this Eurovision is one of the greatest musical experiences I ever had watching a song contest. It really has EVERYTHING I search in a song contest. It's incredible how many instant classics this contest has: I have at least 5 or 6 songs in my top 20 EVER performed in Eurovision, and I'm not even kidding. This contest was unbelievably good: we will never have a contest with songs of this level, ever: even my songs around 20th positions are good... That said, my ranking is as it follows.

1 - :tr: Şebnem Paker - Dinle
2 - :ee: Marija-Liis Ilus - Kelatuud maa
3 - :cy: Hara & Andreas Kostantinou - Mana Mou
4 - :uk: Katrina & The Waves - Love shine a light
5 - :pl: Anna Maria Jopek - Ale Jestem
6 - :fr: Fanny - Sentiments Songes
7 - :it: Jalisse - Fiumi di parole
8 - :is: Paul Oscar - Minn hinsti dans
9 - :dk: Thomas Lægård - Stemmen i mit liv
10 - :ru: Alla Pugacheva - Primadonna
11 - :es: Marcos Llunas - Sin Rencor
12 - :gr: Marianna Zorba - Horepse
13 - :mt: Debbie Scerri - Let me fly
14 - :pt: Celia Lawson - Antes do Adeus
15 - :se: Blond - Bara hon älskar mig
16 - :ie: Marc Roberts - Mysterious Woman
17 - :sl: Tanja Ribic - Zbudi se
18 - :hr: E.N.I. - Probudi me

the real choice!

Unsurprisingly, Dinle is in my top 5 Eurovision songs ever with Cyprus 1982, Ireland 1967, Monaco 1971 and Denmark 1963... All those songs were my winners for those years. I absolutely love everything about those entries and those I will never skip. They just have that something that keeps me stunned every time I listen to them.

Well, this year surely has lots and lots of ballads! I think the best ones were really underappreciated (Romania and Slovakia were lovely and really underrated, Switzerland didn't deserve nul points), while some were extremely overrated (Malta and Belgium for example). Israel won and to be honest it is a fair winner, even if I don't think it's one of the best winners of the '90s. It was not a bad edition overall, even if it paled in comparison to 1997 for obvious reasons.
