What I'm hoping for this year is especially that the televoters and the jury will pick the best song, and that the best song is going to be performed well by a strong artist.
I personally believe that Denmark would have done a lot better here in the 2020's if those two criteria had been met. People tend to forget that in some editions we've seen some great Danish entries that just didn't survive the transfer from the studio to the liveshow.
This is a list of songs that I think may have qualified if they had gone through from the Danish competition. Number one on the list is a bit special, because that song did win the NF, but never got to compete at Eurovision because of the pandemic. The bookmakers had it as a comfortable qualifier, and the results from certain contests pointed in the same direction.
I regard the top 5 of my list as songs that would probably have qualified for the Grand Final, the bottom half is slightly more questionable.
Ben & Tan: ”Yes” (2020) - by far the best Danish winner in this decade so far
The Cosmic Twins: "Silver Bullet" (2021) - the vocals were so bad that they apologized after the show, but Lise Cabble had written a real Eurovision banger here
EYJAA: ”I Was Gonna Marry Him” (2023) - the televoters didn't connect with it, but it was played a lot on the radio both before and after DMGP
Jasmin Rose feat. RoxorLoops: ”Human” (2020) - it was a pre-favourite for the win, but many things went wrong on stage with this one
Conf3ssions: "Hallelujah" (2022) - another pre-favourite that collapsed because of the nervousness and inexperience of the singers
Aura Dione : ”Mirrorball of Hope” (2024) - the televoters didn't support this one enough, maybe the song is too pretentious for the Danes, and it's a song that is hard to sing perfectly
Basim: ”Johnny” (2024) - he's a more confident singer than Saba and won the televote, but the jury went with the Melfest product
Josie Elinor & Jack Warren: "Let Me Go" (2022) - not my favourite on the list, but the sweet and simple melody would have had chances, I think
Emma Nicoline: "Står lige her" (2021) - from what I gathered on YouTube, this song was quite popular among non-Danish Eurovision influencers, but it didn't make it to the Danish top 3
Nicklas Sonne: ”Freedom” (2023) - this song was actually well-performed on stage, and although the melody wasn't impactfull imo, it received quite a lot of praise outside Denmark
The fact that good songs may lose out to worse songs in the NF's is, of course, an issue in all countries with NF's. But when a country tends to be a borderline qualifier, it plays a relatively bigger role.
