Re: ICELAND || HUH! HUH! HUH! | WV 67: Rökkurró - Svanur

Oh Flo, how you've broken me with this one. You've created the cry-laugh. The song was breaking my heart but the video couldn't wipe the big smile off of my face. I wanted to laugh and to cry at the same time. You were melting my heart whilst making me giggle. I love birds so muchxheart

The bit with the swan taking flight in slow motion is ridiculously beautiful and how you've matched it to the part where the music starts to pick up speed is the most bless thing ever. You're a sensitive person but you've also got a charming sense of humour, and the fact I can't work out whether you're sitting there with a smile on your face whilst making this video makes it even better.

This is exactly the kind of song I love and look forward to from the ShoeFlo. It's not music that's for everyone. For someone like me though, who's introverted and needs music like this to float in, to sometimes wallow in, to breathe in... well, your entries are often just perfect, and you've introduced me to so many brilliant artists. Up until this point, I believe that Rökkurró owned the title of having my least favourite ShoeFlo song sent to WorldVision. Well she'll still own that title for now, but she from this moment also has one of the best ShoeFlo songs ever sent to the contest. I'll be devastated for you if this doesn't reach the final. I will have everything crossed for youxcrossed

Thanks to all who voted for this wondrous song about swans, one of the most majestic animal. It's another great success and every positive feedback makes my heart beating faster. It truly means a lot to me. Good results encourage me to take more risks in the future. Beside a 'retro song NF' there are also some electro and pop songs on my list. However, I will keep sending my favorite artists (which are familiar to you) now and then cause I love them too much to hide them from you.

When I was looking for a swan picture to insert it in this post I found a fascinating creature:

Anniversary Show!

WV 68 will be my 30th edition... Time is running so fast! xfaint Anyway, I thought this is a good moment to look back and honour my WV history by organize a special whiteshoes show on plug.dj, comparable to what Anna and Aigars organized a while ago, in which I will play all my songs and so on. :p Sorry, I don't know how to write this post without appearing totally egoncentric and narcisstic. I can guarentee you that I would join your annivrsary shows too, as I did in Anna's and Aigars' show given that your taste is appealing to me. It has always been a big fun! As I wrote before, time is running so fast, we are in a never-ending rush so we might forget old WV entries easily and it's nice to liven them up and to remember the past.

I made a list of users that I'd like to invite cause they might be interested!

daniels1000 Stargazer RainyWoods as78 JamieBrown Lupus lavieenrose Ringdalen Genesis Nicholas123 MARCOMEN EurovisionSmile

Moreover I wouldn't mind to see some newbies in my room, such as Salmon and ZoboCamel but in case of Zobo of course the time zone is highly problematic (it would start at 21 CET) so I really don't expect you to join. However, now nobody can claim that I didn't invite you

Basically, everybody who is interested should feel free to join us.

However, I didn't decide for a day. The more people are involved the more difficult it is to find a perfect day for things like this. That's why I made a Doodles Survey: http://doodle.com/poll/ehu9wk3vcafvw5bd
You can write down your name and chose those time periods which are alright for you so at the end I have an overview and know the best possible day.

Re: Áfram Ìsland! | WV 68: it's getting hot! Hotter than ever!

Atm it looks like Monday, 29th August is the best day for the show. It would totally make sense because on tuesday, wednesday, thursday the WV LLs will take place so it's better to not have my show at the same evening.

Of those who didn't take part in the Doodle Poll so far I know that Ben is still on holidays. I know that Anna would like to join but I know she has trouble with her new laptop charger. Maybe I can convince her to wait until Tuesday to send back her charger. The others are probably not interested which is totally fine anyway.

For now, I think the 29th August is the day we're gonna head to! :p

You will get to enjoy me in wreck form as my sleeping pattern is off at the moment, and i'm trying to fix it before my Father comes to visit in a couple of days. I didn't sleep last nightxheat I will keep drinking tea to keep me awake and listen to some new popsicle songs I found and enjoy very much. Do you like No Doubt-esque ska-ish popsicles Flo? I need to decide on my WV entry in the next couple of hours and it's making me panic.

No idea if I like "No Doubt-esque ska-ish popsicles" ... but now and then, I enjoy Ska. No doubt is so-so for me. If you like, you can spam me on facebook. But what happened to the two songs you considered before? You know how much I love that one song...

WV 68: John Grant - Global Warming

4t0uxMcQ.jpg

Lyrics

You people and your cute little terms you like to throw around and make everybody squirm
Upper class, middle class, lower class, Sassafras
Everybody these days thinks that they're a bad-ass
How am I supposed to live in a world with no Madeline Kahn my favourite girl is gone
[?] is not an auto zone, 31 is trash and now I just want to be left alone

Global warming is ruining my fair complexion
Augmenting all my imperfections
And Brazil does not need more encouragement
Global warming encourages slack jawed troglodytes
To leave their homes with guns and knives
In search of bodily refreshments and some homicide

I'm so sick of hearing people talk about the sun
They sound like a bunch of Aztec Indians
And all they do is hang out clogging up the streets
Congratulating each other on their pedicured feet
Sure I like to see the fella's skateboard in their Vans
Stripped down to their shorts so they can work on their tans
I know I shouldn't care cause I'm a taken man
But I guess you can look, nobody said that you can't

Global warming is ruining my fair complexion
Augmenting all my imperfections
And Brazil does not need more encouragement
Global warming encourages slack jawed troglodytes
To leave their homes with guns and knives
In search of bodily refreshments and some homicide

All I've got are first world problems
I guess I better get some more third world kind

--------

After being relatively successful with a beautiful song about swans (in soviet english: ducks) I tried a very different approach this time. I sent the singer-songwriter John Grant with one of his beautiful chamber-pop ballads "Global Warming". I am sorry if you expected a different kind of song when I announced the entry would be "hotter than ever"

John Grant is an American singer-songwriter with a difficult and tragical past. He was addicted to drugs and alcohol and he used to have problems to accept his homosexuality. Moreover, sadly he is HIV-positive. However, this is past cause nowadays he overcome all his problems (apart of the HIV thing obviously) and he is a satisfied, taken man with a growing fanbase. Music has been like a therapy for him cause all his problems, experience and thoughts he put in the lyrics so the lyricses are often very personal and tragical. However, he also has a great sense of self-deprecation and a great humour, so thats why songs of him can be funny, entertaining and intelligent. I love the messages of his song in his ballads. His ballads sound sooo nostalgically and Global Warming is a perfect example for this. He he also a weakness for electro-pop but I'm not so keen on those songs.

Why is he eligible for Iceland? Well, he lived there for around five years and he had huge success there (for example Global Warming was 4th in the Icelandic Charts afaik). He often said he feels safe in the tolerant Icelandic society. Iceland as a country inspired him and his music and he made many new friends and people to collaborate with (one of them is Ásgeir xheat ). Quickly the Icelandic people started to consider him as one of them. Within a very short time John Grant became fluent in Icelandic. He has some connection to Eurovision as he wrote the English lyrics for Icelands entry of 2014 (Pollapönk - No Prejudices). By the way, he speaks not only Icelandic fluently but also German and Russian. I heard interviews with him, I can tell you his German is absolutely accent-free. It's incredible xfaint

For me personally, John Grant doesn't play in the same league as Ásgeir or Jonsi for example (who I adore) but he is certainly one of the artists I listen to very regularly and I have great respect for him. Actually, he was the only of my Top 10 artists/bands that I didn't send to WV before, so now I fixed it :D I like him so much that I last year wrote a biography of him including a review of his newest album for the University magazine which I'm part of. I think the article was very good and I hope I helped to spread him and his music, made him more famous and made other people in my town listen to his stuff :D Anyway... Hope you guys enjoy! This time I am happy about every single point I receive!

Re: Áfram Ìsland! | WV 68: John Grant - Global Warming

John Grant is not mad at all about being out in the Semi xshifty

No srsly, thanks to all who voted for Iceland. I am surprised in a very positive way that I came very close to qualify for the final, I thought I would end up in the bottom 5 tbh.
After this failure, I'm gonna go the safe way in the next edition...

...by making a Retro National Final with the best Icelandic songs from the 1960s and 1970s xheat
Yes, there were music in Iceland before Björk.
Expect some psychedelic rock, melancholic pop, and typical feel-good-oldies. In a nutshell: The most unhippest NF of WV history! xcheer
After this NF you will have wrinkles everywhere and you need to buy catheters and rollators. Don't say I didn't warn you.
I'm gonna post it as soon as I'm allowed to do.

It is very sad news about Mr. John Grant's DNQ but as you mention, the result is very much a good one, and better than expected. If only the two PQ players were swapped around and I had voted in semi 2, but it's not good to dwell. I'm delighted you've fallen in love with John's music, seemingly more than i've ever been in love with it myself. He's a very special artist with charming, self deprecating lyrics that are somehow relatable. Glad he was finally sent to WorldVision (after a near year of my begging) and people got to hear him. It was a great choice of song from the new album.

I look very much forward to your special Retro NF. If ever there was an NF made especially for me, it's probably this one. Psychedelic rock? Melancholic pop? My body has had years of training for this moment. Am an expect in the field of both. My ears await the treats you have on offer my friend. Stimulate me.

Welcome to Iceland's National Final for WV 69 xcheer

The motto of Söngvakeppnin 69 is "Retro hits". What does it mean?
All the 7 songs of this selection were recorded between 1960 and 1979... In one case I chose a newer interpretation of an old song, though.

While contemporary Iceland music is notorious and appreciated by some people, Icelandic music of the 1960s and 1970s is a total untrod territory (out of Iceland) and I am probably the first creature in the big world of internet who deals with this part of music history and who gives it a platform in a big music forum like this one.

1. Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson - Söknuður (1977)

Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson is considered one the most gifted Icelandic singer of history. He was known for having a soft voice, perfectly suitable for the popular music at that time in Iceland. Sadly, he died with only 35 years in a car crash in Luxemburg in 1979. He is still beloved nowadays, people can sing his famous songs by heart. In 2008 there was a memorial concert held in his honor where many of Iceland’s most respected musicians performed.

"Söknuður" (Sorrow) is one of his later songs but probably his most famous one. Vilhjálmur wrote this song after the death of a friend and the song is a tribute to him, full of bright memories of their friendship but also with the message that everybody will die sooner or later and we have to accept it. The song often used in funerals.
People in Iceland are sure that this song was the inspiration for the famous "You Raise me up" by Secret Garden, especially since the melody sound similar and due to the fact that writer Rolf Løvland in his young years spent some time in Iceland

2. Trúbrot - Án Þín (1969)

Trúbrot were an Icelandic psychedelic/progressive rock band active in the late 1960s and early 1970s and they were formed in 1969 as an supergroup composed of members of the bands Hljómar (more about them in song 6) and Flowers. They broke up in 1973.
While the first album is entirely in Icelandic, later albums featured more English singing, which was at the time controversial in Iceland. However, Án Þín is from the debut album in 1969. The song has no special message, it's a typical "I miss you, life without you life is so horrible" song.. but hey, the instrumentals here are very interesing. Scandalously the last 13 seconds of this song are missing in this youtube video.

3. Ég er kominn heim (originally 1960, this version from 2011)

Now this is a true classic. "Ég er kominn heim" was recorded 1960 and sung by the pop singer Óðinn Valdimarsson. It's a song about homesickness and the beauty of "home" and the positive sides of living at a place where you feel home and where you belong. The song was covered many many times by other Icelandic pop singers. Meanwhile it's a like an Icelandic "You'll never walk alone" cause it is played and sung by people in pubs and for example in football stadiums. The Icelandic football fans who were in France this summer spread it there as much as they could do. :D
I prefered the Helgi Björnsson version of 2011 over the original cause I love the men choir.

4. Trúbrot - Ég veit að þú kemur (1969)

Another Trúbrot song from the same album as the first song, maybe a bit more messy and trippy. The message of a song in a nutshell: "Come to me, let's ignite a fire together." Or so.

5. Brunaliðið - Ástarsorg (1979)

Not many informations about the band. I just know they had a lot of commercial success in Iceland and that most of their songs were much happier than this one.
I love this cause it's so nostalgic. By the way, "Ástarsorg" means "lovesickness" Moreover, John Grant performed it once.

6. Hljómar – Þú og ég (1967)

Hljómar, also known as "Thor's Hammer" was an Icelandic rock band primarily active in the 1960s. Their style can be described as garage rock, fuzz rock, and freakbeat, with noticeable influences from both The Who and The Beatles. They are basically unknown out of Iceland, but at least they once recorded some EPs in London. In 1969 a number of Hljómar members went on to form the prog-flavored band Trúbrot.
I remember that I discovered "Þú og ég" thanks to a an Icelandic film about drug dealing. There was featured a remix version of that song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I5g3khRFZ4 (which would probably do much better in WV than the original xD). There was a time when I was really addicted to that song.

7. Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson - Vor í Vaglaskógi (1966)

We started with a Vilhjálmur song so let's also finish with one. And here we've even got a super-alliteration xheat
When I sent a cover of this song to WV one and a half year ago it turned out to be a good idea so I take this as a positive omen. According to my information, one is allowed to send the original song when the cover was already sent provided that 20 editions were in between. So this song should be eligible. This is less dramatic and melancholic as the Kaleo version but a bit more distinctive and energetic. :p

Because I better waste my time with creating pointless intro videos like the one up there. However, I can offer a LIVE LISTENING if people want it. ;)

This is a very ... polarizing National Final so I mention only a small group of people who might enjoy this selection. For the most users here I have no hope (in terms of liking this selection, not in general!).

Not sure if you like this selection but I would be grateful if you give it a chance ZoboCamel (No idea if you like 1960s/1970s rock/pop ... if not, you can ignore this xD )

Sorry, if I mentioned some of your more than once. I'm writing this post for hours and I'm a little tired so mistakes can happen I guess.

Excuse me... "even if"? I say please do that in front of your microphone. That would be pretty eargasmic I suppose and sounds as a possible 12 from Scotland. If possible, in addition with a video including your yeti icon, swans, white shoes, just some snow here and there ... and of course background sounds of Sigur Ros' bowed guitar. Perhaps if you're doing well with it you could also use Julianna Barwick's choir voices. Sounds pretty much as a good experimental music idea to me. Don't worry, we'll find a way to make you eligible for Iceland.
