The Netherlands NETHERLANDS 2024 - Joost Klein - Europapa

For me [ʀ] is no problem on its own or within a single word. However, if I had to use it all the time I would think I scratch my uvula bloody. (Apparently it is also considered acceptable in German but I do not recall ever hearing somebody speak like that.) Can you master a 'proper' Dutch /g/...

The Netherlands NETHERLANDS 2024 - Joost Klein - Europapa

In German [r] has been strongly recessive for at least fifty years (it had been in gradual decline before) but :de: parts of Frisia, where also Low Saxon is still widespread, rank among the regions where people typically have retained that alveolar trill. Which is why I was surprised also...

Iceland ICELAND 2024 - Hera Björk - Scared of Heights

I'm not sure but are songwriters actually entitled to withdraw their entry once the selection process is over? If so, I'd expect hefty penalties for breach of contract.

Iceland ICELAND 2024 - Hera Björk - Scared of Heights

"Scared of heights" won, not Hera. Making her sing a completely different song in Malmö would be an even worse level of defraud than sending the runner-up. Technically I guess they could hand SOH to Bashar, however.:D

Austria AUSTRIA 2024 - Kaleen - We Will Rave

Articles on esckompakt are very friendly and diplomatic in general (at times too vanilla for my liking actually), and particularly well-disposed towards acts from German-speaking countries, including the Austrian ones. Recently they have more outspokingly been levelling criticism at the NDR...

Greece GREECE 2024 - Marina Satti - Zari

I like it. A little afraid though it might suffer the same fate as Utopian land which had a similar amateurish feel to it.

The Netherlands NETHERLANDS 2024 - Joost Klein - Europapa

I wonder if is his 'French' pronunciation of 'r' [ʀ] is common in Dutch-language pop music/arts or perceived as dialectal?!

Switzerland SWITZERLAND 2024 - Nemo - The Code

Not my cup of tea even if I enjoy the rap parts.

Iceland ICELAND 2024 - Hera Björk - Scared of Heights

Yawn have her wear a keffiyeh as a compromise but let her slay the bop.

Austria AUSTRIA 2024 - Kaleen - We Will Rave

Kaleen is Austria's Elena Tsagrinou. Can sing and dance well, fobbed off with an underwhelming dance pop number, not even capable of spelling 'charism'.

Italia delivering once again.❤️ Great job!

Israel ISRAEL 2024 - Eden Golan - Hurricane

This is just the Atlantic point of view. Others would say the reverse is true. Fair enough, but banning the Ukraine is obviously not on the table. Also given that it's arguably going to be their first "normal" participation since 2021 targetting them will hopefully be considered even more...

Israel ISRAEL 2024 - Eden Golan - Hurricane

How many are biased in favour of Israel to the extent they would vote for her out of sympathy? This is not the Ukraine we are talking about.

Israel ISRAEL 2024 - Eden Golan - Hurricane

Still the official reasoning was not they had been blackmailed but that "in light of the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine, the inclusion of a Russian entry in this year’s Contest would bring the competition into disrepute." Replace "Ukraine" with "Gaza" and "Russian" with "Israeli" and it stays...

Israel ISRAEL 2024 - Eden Golan - Hurricane

I do not think keeping Germany in is worth all the backlash and security risk the contest is going to get for allowing Israel. (Also if the rules were clear on the issue, she would probably not withdraw either.) That kind of precident reading will only cause them more trouble in the long run.

Israel ISRAEL 2024 - Eden Golan - Hurricane

Banned from the competition = excluded. I am not asking for KAN to be thrown out of the EBU altogether but letting them fly the flag under current circumstances would drag the entire contest in the mud even if everything else went off without a hitch.

Israel ISRAEL 2024 - Eden Golan - Hurricane

I agree, but that's double standards then. Banning Channel One in 2022 has technically already created a precedent. Obviously for reasons of expediency, however, the EBU did miss the opportunity to amend the statutes by explicitly stating that broadcasters representing countries actively engaged...
