Norway is currently in the midst of an exciting edition Melodi Grand Prix 2024 with the third and final semi-final being on Saturday. Among the six talented acts gracing the stage is the independent artist Annprincess. In this interview, we got the chance to talk about her journey, advocacy for mental health, and of course her song for this year’s MGP, “Save Me.”

Hello Annprincess, welcome to ESCUnited! We’re thrilled that you wanted to join us for a conversation today. To kick things off, could you introduce yourself to those who may not be familiar with you?

– Heyyy, my name is Annprincess and I’m an independent artist based in Norway. I would say that as an artist I am deeply passionate about mental health. So all my songs are influenced by that.

You have mentioned that Adele and Celine Dion are both two central influences of yours. How do you think that presents in your general musical sound?

When it comes to sound, I’m still looking for the sound that describes me as an artist, because I really just make music that sounds good to me.
But when I say I’m influenced by these artists, it’s mostly their personalities, their character, and their work ethics I’m influenced by. When it comes to Adele; she’s just so simple, classy, and elegant. She can sell out a stadium with just her voice and a piano. So I’m inspired by how she effortlessly moves your audience with just her voice.
When it comes to Celine Dion, it’s also mostly the same because I feel they are very similar artists. Their technique and their voice strength are just amazing! So I’m inspired by how technically amazing they are.

During my research for this interview, I stumbled upon an article you wrote, where you described some of the hardships that you had to go through to get to where you are now. How has your past influenced you as a person and musically?

Me being on the MGP stage just proves that if you have a passion, never give up! My past has made me stronger as a person because you get used to not having things handed to you, you get used to having to work for the things you want. You develop a very strong mentality, and it’s made me a more open person.
And musically my past has made me more courageous to share my story, to maybe be the voice for others who need encouragement. To be bold and go full force for what you want! My past has made me kind of a badass both personally and professionally.

You have also mentioned wanting to be on music-entertainment television before, with some attempts at Norwegian Idol and a stint in The Voice Norway 2022. Could you walk us through your drive for music?

– I just want to sing and tell stories through music. I think when you have a passion for something, your call in life is to share it with as many people as possible. And for me, knowing that my song resonates with people makes it more important for me to expand and reach those people who need to hear that their existence in this world is vital. I really don’t want to do anything else than sing and genuinely connect with people.

To speak about your entry “Save Me.” What was the process of writing and producing the song like? Did you make this song specifically for this year’s MGP?

No, this song was not specifically made for MGP. Maybe it would have turned out differently if I was writing a song for MGP. But the process of writing “Save Me” was pretty straightforward. Music to me comes naturally and fast. So “Save Me” was written and created in less than an hour.
Last year I tried for MGP and wasn’t accepted. So after writing the song, I loved how uplifting it was, so I thought let’s just try MGP again. And omg, they accepted it.

You have mentioned involving yourself in mental health advocacy. Could you tell us a bit about how you incorporate mental health themes into your music? What does it mean for you to address topics like this?

Knowing how much pain and loneliness there’s out there, it just makes me want to help people even more, through my music. When I’m brave enough to sing about my own experiences, other people find comfort in that and it makes my soul happy. And I think it’s one of the most important things humans can do for other humans, which is help. And the way I can help is through music.

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know?

Haha, people might not know that I’m actually pretty shy. An introvert that loves to be at home and loves, loves her me-time.

I think many in our audience would be excited to hear what you have planned for the live show. As a little teaser, could you describe in one sentence, what viewers should get ready for?

Be ready for intense storytelling on stage!

Regardless of the outcome at this year’s MGP, what goals do you strive for in the future, both in your music career and personal life?

My plan for this year is to expand my audience, enter mainstream media, create more visuals, and release my debut album inspired by celebrating life and celebrating yourself. So it’s going to be a party album.

Lastly, is there anything you would like to share with our readers here at ESCUnited?

Yes. To anyone out there who feels like they don’t fit in for whatever reason, please use my song as comfort and know that you are going to be okay. And if you like the show on Saturday. Please vote!
