This morning, a press conference was announced to be taking place live from the Moldovan capital of Chisinau. However, the news that came out of the press conference came out as completely unexpected. Moldova and it’s broadcaster (TRM) has decided to withdraw fully from participating in Basel, Switzerland.

Moldova withdraws

The press conference was presented by Director of national television Corneliu Durnescu and the Moldovan head of delegation Daniela Crudu.

In a very short and straight to the point press conference, the two spokesperson could announce, that Moldova will not be competing in the 2025 edition.

The reason behind the decision comes after a detailed analyzing of the current situation, as well as financial, administrative and artistical reasons. The contest will still be aired in Moldova, with both the semi-finals and the final.

Corneliu Durnescu went into further details regarding the decision:

  • The decision was not easy to make, but necessary in the current context. This year’s nation selection faced great struggles, including dropped interest with the public, the quality of the songs, and performances of the artists. This created a negative reception with both the public and specialists, and a reform is needed in the selection process.
  • We’ve consulted with specialists in the musical domain, with the majority expressing concerns about Moldova’s participation this year, which was agreed by the jury that TRM selected for this edition. We respect the opinions of the professionals and the public, and we understand we need to make a responsible decision.

During the short press conference, Corneliu Durnescu also denied the rumors about the cost of participation, by stating that Moldova’s participation fee was at 21.486 Euros and not 176.000 Euros, which had circulated into the public knowledge.

Head of delegation for Moldova, Daniela Crudu also shared the following:

  • This decision wasn’t an easy one, but we asure you that it was analyzed in details. We know we wanted to organise a national final with everyone, and to select an entry together. We are convinced that this decision will raise the interest for the upcoming edition. We asure you that we will return with force to Eurovision. It’s important to support the people who wish to reach the big stage, and the chance to prepare them well.

Moldova made their debut in the contest back in 2005 and have participated every year since then. 2025 would’ve marked the 20 year anniversary for their participation in the contest. Unfortunately, instead this will be the first time ever, that Moldova doesn’t participate since their debut.

How are #YOU taking this decision and do #YOU believe Moldova could return in the near future?
