SBS has confirmed that the Australian entrant for the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest will be chosen by internal selection.
In a brief press release earlier today, Australia’s national broadcaster said that submissions for the 2025 contest had now closed, and a public announcement on the representative and song chosen will take place before the European Broadcasting Union’s March submission deadline.
They also hinted at a continued participation in 2026, announcing that expressions of interest for representing the antipodean nation next year are open, and can be sent to entertainment@sbs.com.au.
2025 marks 10 years since Australia’s first appearance at Eurovision, after receiving a special invitation to the 60th contest in Vienna, Austria. In 2016, they were granted a contract to participate until 2023, and since then their participation has been announced on a year-by-year basis.
Australia’s best result came in only their second appearance, with Dami Im’s “Sound of Silence” achieving 2nd place in 2016 and scoring 511 points. Another five of their entries have made the top 10, three of which also won their semi-final.
In 2024, Electric Fields represented Australia with “One Milkali (One Blood)”, which came 11th in semi-final one with 41 points. The song was the first to feature a First Nations Australian language on the Eurovision stage, with lines in Yankunytjatjara, a language local to the remote north-western area of South Australia. It was also the first Eurovision song to feature a yidaki (didgeridoo), which was performed on stage by guest artist Fred Leone.
